How is mbranfiltra different from reverse osmosis?

Originally published:2020-01-01

Reverse osmosis (RO) concentrates wastewater and must discharge a share of it; it removes dissolved salts. Hollow-fiber microfiltration lets water pass through a membrane that physically retains bacteria and particles larger than its rated pore size; it does not remove dissolved salts. The two technologies are not equivalent.

Whether electricity is needed, and how the water is used, depends on the product: the thumb-sized portable filters and filter bottles need no electricity; the household filter runs on qualified tap water under household water pressure (working pressure 15–45 psi, flow varies with the pressure) and must be flushed for 5 minutes at first use or after a cartridge change; filtration systems for industrial processes are configured to the process requirements. See each product's specifications for its conditions.
